CHAPTER SEVEN
âA wife,â Nolan echoed. His dark eyes widened in undisguised horror. It was as if Maryanne had suggested he climb to the roof of the apartment building and leap off.
âDonât get so excited. I wasnât volunteering for the position.â
With his index finger pointing at her like the barrel of a shotgun, Nolan walked around the kitchen table again, his journey made in shuffling impatient steps. He circled the table twice before he spoke.
âYou cleaned my home, washed my clothes and now youâre cooking my dinner.â Each word came at her like an accusation.
âYes?â
âYou canât possibly look at me with those baby-blues of yours and expect me to believeââ
âBelieve what?â
âThat youâre not applying for the job. From the moment we met, youâve been doing all theseâ¦these sweet girlie things to entice me.â
âSweet girlie things?â Maryanne repeated, struggling to contain her amusement. âI donât think I understand.â
âI donât expect you to admit it.â
âI havenât the foggiest idea what youâre talking about.â
âYou know,â he accused her with an angry shrug.
âObviously I donât. What could I possibly have done to make you think Iâm trying to entice you?â
âSweet girlie things,â he said again, but without the same conviction. He chewed on his bottom lip for a moment while he mulled the matter over. âAll right, Iâll give you an exampleâthat perfume youâre always wearing.â
âWindchime? Itâs a light fragrance.â
âI donât know the name of it. But it hangs around for an hour or so after youâve left the room. You know that, and yet you wear it every time weâre together.â
âIâve worn Windchime for years.â
âThatâs not all,â he continued quickly. âItâs the way I catch you looking at me sometimes.â
âLooking at you?â She folded her arms at her waist and rolled her eyes toward the ceiling.
âYes,â he said, sounding even more peevish. He pressed his hand to his hip, cocked his chin at a regal angle and fluttered his eyelashes like fans.
Despite her effort to hold in her amusement, Maryanne laughed. âI can only assume that youâre joking.â
Nolan dropped his hand from his hip. âIâm not. You get this innocent look and your lips pout just so⦠Why, a manâany manâcouldnât keep from wanting to kiss you.â
âThatâs preposterous.â But Maryanne instinctively pinched her lips together and closed her eyes.
Nolanâs arm shot out. âThatâs another thing.â
âWhat now?â
âThe way you get this helpless flustered look and itâs all a simpleminded male can do not to rush in and offer to take care of whateverâs bothering you.â
âBy this time you should know Iâm perfectly capable of taking care of myself,â Maryanne felt obliged to remind him.
âYouâre a lamb among wolves,â Nolan said. âI donât know how long you intend to play out this silly charade, but personally I think youâve overdone it. This isnât your world, and the sooner you go back where you belong, the better.â
âBetter for whom?â
âMe!â he cried vehemently. âAnd for you,â he added with less fervor, as though it was an afterthought. He coughed a couple of times and reached for a package of cough drops in the pocket of his plaid robe.
